Top 10 Study Habits of Highly Successful Students

Successful students, as some people wrongly believe, are not born that way. While for some students passing their exams is quite difficult, for others it’s as easy as falling off a log! A vast majority of students achieve success by developing certain skills and study habits. If you too want to become a successful student, you should work hard and never get discouraged by other distractions that may divert your focus from your key objective: to get better grades in your exams.

The following are the top 10 study habits employed by highly successful students.

1.    They schedule their study time and stick to it
For being a highly successful student, you need to schedule your study time each day throughout the week and then stick to it. Having a study timetable helps you to perform better than those who study at irregular time periods. Moreover, you will find that you automatically become motivated prior to the time you are planning to sit down and study.

2.    They are good time managers
Successful students know how to make full use of every day, hour and minute. To be successful, you should start managing your time wisely. Make a to-do list for every day and make sure you achieve your goals.  Don’t waste the blocks of time you get outside the class-- utilize them for studying or making notes. Divide your study time wisely for the courses or subjects you need to cover, with more time allotted for the most difficult ones and less time for the easier ones.

3.    Successful students study with a clear purpose
Directionless studying is not going to take you anywhere. Before you start studying, set goals for each study session and reward yourself when you achieve your goals. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals for studying.

4.    They avoid procrastination
It is very easy to delay your study time for anything more interesting like watching a new movie, going out with friends or logging on to your Facebook or Twitter account. Successful students do not procrastinate studying for anything. They stick to their study routine and that is the key to their success.

5.    Successful students want to learn
Highly successful students go the extra mile to learn about the things in their field. They research websites, rent books and DVDs and get recommendations from experts and senior students in their field. The reason why they are successful is because they take complete interest in their studies and don’t take it as a burden.

6.    They study with full concentration
When you are studying with distractions you are unable to focus and concentrate on your studies. Your time is wasted and you are unable to achieve your goals or complete the tasks from your to-do list. Highly successful students study in a quiet study area (like a library) where there is no one to disturb them.

7.    Successful Students are Attentive during the Class Lectures

They attend the classes regularly, listen carefully to what the teacher says and make notes.  To be successful in your studies, value what the course instructor tells you.  Read the topic in advance before it is discussed in class so that you can be well-prepared and ask the instructor about anything can confuses you.

If a particular topic is challenging or tough, don’t hesitate to seek help from the instructor and ask them about the useful strategies and valuable resources that can help you in your study.

8.    They make effective use of study groups.
Most successful students study in groups where they can help each other to study. Studying in a group helps you better understand a difficult topic by taking guidance from others. It even helps you complete a project faster.

9.    Successful students revise and review regularly
To be a successful student, you need to review and revise what you studied over the weekend. This way, the topics to be covered are not piled up. You are well-prepared to continue learning new topics that may be based on the principles and concepts of the previous topics.

10.    They are well-prepared for their exams
Successful students prepare for exams well in advance instead of studying one or two nights before the exam. They start planning their studies according to the exam schedule. To do well in exams like a successful student, you should:

-    Be prepared for the exams well before time by covering topics marked as important.
-    Get a good night’s sleep before the exams. There is no use of starting new topics just a night before.
-    Don’t work on tough topics just before the exam.

Remember, studying is not just about passing the exams. It is about what you learn by attending a class lecture or covering a topic. Try to adopt the habits listed above and you will soon be on the road towards academic success.
